10th Class Biology Practicals: Complete Guide for Matric Students
Overview of Practical Examination
The 10th class Biology practical examination carries 30 total marks and is conducted over 2 hours. The paper is divided into five main sections, each testing different practical skills and knowledge areas.
Question 1: Temporary Mount Preparation (06 Marks)
Students must prepare a temporary mount of a provided specimen and draw a labelled diagram. The four important slides to practice are:
- Onion Epidermis – Study of plant cells showing cell wall, nucleus, and cytoplasm
- Frog Blood – Observation of nucleated red blood cells in vertebrates
- Cheek Cells – Animal cell structure with cell membrane and nucleus
- Stomata in Lower Epidermis – Guard cells and stomatal pore structure
Marks Distribution:
- Mounting and Demonstration: 03 marks
- Labelled Diagram: 03 marks
Question 2: Identification of Specimens (10 Marks)
Students are given five specimens (A to E) which could be slides, models, or actual specimens. For each, they must provide identification and reasoning.
Key Specimens to Remember:
Microorganisms:
- Bacteria – Prokaryotic, unicellular, cell wall present
- Amoeba – Irregular shape with pseudopodia
- Paramecium – Slipper-shaped with cilia
- Volvox – Ball-like colony with daughter colonies
Animals:
- Hydra – Vase-like body with tentacles
- Planaria – Flat, ribbon-like body
- Earthworm – Segmented, tube-shaped body
- Snail – Calcareous shell with muscular foot
- Starfish – Star-shaped with central disc and five arms
- Frog – Glandular skin without scales
- Shark – Ventrally located mouth, cartilaginous fish
Plants:
- Onion Bulb – Underground stem with fleshy leaves
- Mosses – Small, flowerless green clumps
- Dicot Root – Root hairs present, phloem between xylem arms
Organ Models:
- Human Eye – Spherical, three-layered structure
- Human Kidney – Bean-shaped, dark red organ
- Human Brain – Mushroom-shaped, three divisions
Marks Distribution:
- Correct Identification: 05 marks
- Reasoning/Characteristics: 05 marks
Question 3: Performance of Experiment (08 Marks)
Students perform an experiment allotted by the examiner from either 9th or 10th syllabus topics.
Required Components:
- Steps of Procedure (03 marks)
- Observations (02 marks)
- Results with Diagrams (03 marks)
Important Note: For frog dissection, only a labelled diagram is required (no procedure).
Question 4: Practical Notebook (03 Marks)
The notebook must be:
- Made neat and clean by the student
- Checked and signed by the subject teacher
- Well-maintained with all experiments recorded
Question 5: Viva Voce (03 Marks)
The examiner asks questions related to the experiment performed. Students should be prepared to explain:
- Purpose of the experiment
- Procedure steps
- Observations made
- Biological principles involved
Preparation Tips
- Practice slide preparation for all four important specimens
- Memorize key characteristics of each specimen in the identification list
- Understand experimental procedures rather than rote learning
- Draw and label diagrams neatly during practice
- Maintain a clean, organized notebook throughout the year
Common Experiments from Syllabus
9th Class Topics: 4.5, 5.2, 6.1, 6.2, 7.1, 7.3, 7.4, 7.5, 8.1, 9.1, 9.3, 9.4, 9.5, 9.7, 9.9, 10
10th Class Topics: 10.1-10.4, 11.1, 12.2-12.3, 13.1, 14.5-14.6, 16.1
Success in practical exams comes from regular practice, understanding the specimens, and being able to explain observations clearly. Good luck with your preparations!
